The lawsuit, filed in March, alleges that Apple's advertising of Siri doesn't reflect real-world usage. Have you been doing a lot of Pinging lately? Not pinging like ‘ping google.com’ to test your connectivity, you know using Ping to tell all your friends about music you’re listening to.You remember Ping right? Apple’s ‘social network for music’ launched back in September of 2010. Honestly, I had completely forgotten about Ping until a couple days ago. I used it a few times right after it launched to ‘follow’ a few bands I like – but for me it suffered from the worst ailment that can afflict any social network: none of my friends or acquaintances were on it. And when that’s…
  • Next-Gen iMacs and MacBook Airs to Have ‘Retina’ Displays as Well

Now that rumors surrounding the next-generation MacBook Pro have reached a fever pitch, ABC News has rounded up those rumors and throws in their own two cents. Specifically, Joanna Stern claims that the iMac will also gain the new ultra high-resolution “Retina” displays that are already in use on iPhones and iPads, and believed to be coming to the new MacBook Pros. For quite some time now, Apple has been building in “HiDPI” support into the latest version of OS X. This allows on-screen graphical elements to scale to the high-resolution displays. Of course, this…

  • How to distribute Kickstarter apps: Ask Apple

    Mike Schramm
    16 May 2012 | 2:45 pm
Republique is an upcoming iOS title that's made a lot of noise by getting funded on Kickstarter recently, to the tune of half a million dollars, but I've had one nagging question about it: How exactly are they going to distribute the app to all of their backers? The most obvious solution would be to put a password gate inside of an app, but Apple doesn't allow that. If you have to lock content in your app, then you're clearly selling it outside of the App Store, which means you're dodging Apple's 30% cut. So what's their plan? Republique hasn't yet said, only that it's still being decided.
  • China Mobile reportedly in talks to carry iPhone officially

    Dave Caolo
    16 May 2012 | 2:00 pm
Reuters reports that China Mobile is talking with Apple about selling the iPhone. China Mobile is the world's largest telecom carrier by subscribers. It claimed over 600 million users at the end of September, 2011 and, interestingly, 10 million iPhone users. Those customers either converted from China Telecom (which does sell iPhones), or bought an iPhone from an Apple Store or the black market. China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua recently told shareholders, "We've been actively talking to Apple on how we can cooperate," further saying that "both sides" hope for increased cooperation. Recent…
  • iPhone could have a four-inch screen, says Wall Street Journal

    Mel Martin
    16 May 2012 | 12:30 pm
The Wall Street Journal claims that Apple is ordering screens from Asian suppliers that are bigger than the 3.5 inch screen that has become the one and only standard for the iPhone. The Journal says iPhone production will begin next month, with new screens that measure at least 4 inches diagonally -- something we've heard before. This could be a response to rival Samsung, who has been featuring larger screens in comparison ads to the iPhone. Samsung offers a 4.3 inch and a 4.8 inch screen on some model phones. Will an enlarged iPhone screen meet the rumored shrunken iPad? No one knows for…
  • iPhone "buzz" gets a boost following celebrity ads

    16 May 2012 | 12:00 pm
Love them or hate them, those new Siri ads starring Zooey Deschanel and Samuel L. Jackson are apparently effective, says a YouGov BrandIndex report. As noted by Fortune's Apple 2.0 blog, the celebrity Siri ads are creating buzz among 18-34 year old questioned in the survey. In just a few weeks, the buzz score for the iPhone went from 16 on April 19 to 51 on May 4, surpassing Android on its way up. The buzz score is based on a survey of consumers who were asked whether they've heard anything about the brand in the last two weeks, either through advertising, news or word of mouth, and whether…
  • HTC handsets delayed at US customs due to ITC injunction over Apple patent

HTC confirmed to The Verge that its One X phone for AT&T and EVO 4G LTE handset for Sprint are being held at the border by customs officials. The shipments are being delayed while the government agency reviews the packages in accordance with an ITC ruling that banned the import of HTC's Android smartphones. In December 2011, the ITC ruled that HTC violated Apple patents, one of which describe a UI feature that lets you tap on an address or phone number as a link and pull down a menu of appropriate actions. This sleeve does bring one rather unique feature to the table. An magnet embedded in the leather—visible through the material—automatically puts the iPad to sleep when it’s inserted, and wakes it when removed. This does require that you put the iPad in properly so that the display is facing towards the case’s front; that is, the side with the stitching and the Beyzacases logo in the bottom right corner. Measuring in at about 11” tall and 9” wide, its front flap is held shut with the same kind of embedded magnets as the sleeve. Gone, however, is the metal buckle that didn’t offer much more than a nice accent. We did find the magnets to be somewhat problematic, however: they have a tendency to automatically unlock the iPad’s…

The end result is an augmented environment that can be used to teach geographic, geologic and hydrological concepts. The team hopes the project will help them develop hands-on…

In response to lawsuits filed last month against Siri, alleging that the intelligent personal assistant software introduced in iPhone 4S doesn’t perform as advertised, Apple has today filed a motion to dismiss the cases, reports Wall Street Journal. Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP, defending Apple against these claims, said in a recent court filing that Siri is currently in Beta and may not be perfect, something the company has already been upfront about but nonetheless, the technology is still “cutting edge”. Apple is also working to get the class-action lawsuit dismissed by claiming…

    14 May 2012 | 6:59 am
After more than 20 pedestrians have been hit by cars so far this year in Bergen County — the city of Fort Lee, New Jersey has begun cracking down on texting while walking by issuing $85 tickets to offenders they're calling “dangerous walkers”.  A moniker that sounds like it came straight out of a zombie movie. Fort Lee police say they've issued nearly 120 tickets in just six weeks - slapping an $85 jaywalking ticket on any pedestrian who is caught texting while walking. “It’s a big distraction. Pedestrians aren’t watching where they are going and they are not…

    11 May 2012 | 3:35 pm
These iPhone Business cards imagined by web designer Frederic Tourrou are causing quite a mixed reaction around the interwebs since they first surfaced on Thursday. The popular consensus from many vocal critics insist that the addition of rounded corners is essential to getting the design right. Advice that Tourrou has already acted on. While most commenter's on The Fancy seem to like the idea — some have not been kind to this Beasty Design original. "Pretty cool.....except he looks like a murderer.... At least wear something better than that if your headline is Hire Me" one…

I would expect the Socialmatic to become instant Hipster wear practically overnight. It comes fully loaded with 16GB of storage, optical zoom, 4:3 touchscreen, WiFi, Bluetooth, LED flash and an internal printer that let's you peel off insta-prints on a whim and stick them around like a post-it note. • Review: Widge by X-Doria: iPad case perfect for kids

    Jeffrey Richardson
    16 May 2012 | 12:38 am
It wasn't long after I started using an iPad that my wife saw how useful it would be to have her own.  Earlier this year, I upgraded to the third generation iPad, which meant that we became a three iPad household.  Having two children in the house (age four and six) made it easy to decide what to do with the extra iPad.  There are lots of high-quality apps designed especially for young children to help with spelling, math, etc.  Indeed, my son's school even has an iPad lab that the children use, and the school has a good list of recommended apps. Although I only let the kids use…

After providing…

    Frank Caron
    16 May 2012 | 2:47 pm
As much as we may not want to admit it, a game’s style goes a long way—especially in a market as crowded as the App Store. With so many games from so many developers, the right icon and the right visual presentation are often the be all and end all of standing out from the pack. And while those of us who love games know that graphics don’t make for a good game, it’s hard to ignore the allure of stylish games. That’s why I jumped on Brandnew Boy [ $3.99 ], the latest action RPG from Oozoo. Sporting the Unreal Engine and a beautiful cel-shaded art style rich in color, the game is…

    16 May 2012 | 12:47 pm
The iOS platform is hardly lacking for games that allow you to send living things to their inevitable death, and Gratuitous Space Battles [ $9.99 (HD)] satisfies the tactical itch with a capital T, while managing to bring some big eye candy and a light sense of humor to compensate you for all your hours spent constructing. When you first launch the app, you’re driven towards a fairly anemic tutorial, which hardly deserves the name. A game like GSB has a lot of meat, layered on top of more meat, with a crust of meat at the center - a simple text-driven tutorial cannot even begin to prepare…

The star of the show this week definitely seems to be the second episode of Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Or, at least, that's what I'm most excited to sink my proverbial teeth into. Like all previous weeks, these games are released in New Zealand first, then a few hours later they hit Asian markets. A while later, they spread across Europe before finally being released in the USA at 11:00 PM Eastern. At that point, all of these links should automagically start working.

Precision is not LostWinds2: Winter of the Melodias' [ $3.99 ] best feature. With the sheer amount of things that LostWinds2 can occasionally demand of its players, this would normally be almost unforgivable but much like the hypothetical rapscallion, LostWinds2 is just too charming to give up. In a post over on the Retro Dreamer website, the company has divulged that this latest title will be called Duckers, and then they went on to explain… well, absolutely nothing actually. Yes that’s right, they’re giving us the old tease treatment. But on the bright side there is the promo art attached to this very post which is both extremely cute as well as intriguing. What’s in…

  • Building your iOS application web presence - options compared

AppifyWP is a very popular WordPress theme that you can buy and install on any web hosting company offering a WordPress environment. You can read my review of AppifyWP here. Another player in the field of application promotional web theme is Tapptics. Today, I want to share my comments about a new service to help you build your application web presence in a snap, without resorting to a web design. The service is called ooomf.com. While the web service is still in its infacy, I think it fills the need for many indie iOS developers. First, the service is very simple to setup: no need to know…

    JF Martin
    2 May 2012 | 6:05 am
Yesterday on Twitter, there was some shatter about Apple rejecting applications that include the Dropbox SDK. MacStories has an excellent article on the issue which is summarized here: Apps that integrate with Dropbox, in fact, can either authenticate through the installed Dropbox app, or, if not installed, open a web view to let users log in with the browser. The alleged problem with Apple is that the Dropbox mobile login page contains a link to go back to Dropbox’s main website/account creation page, and possibly purchase a subscription bypassing Apple’s App Store (and thus…

Here are the results of my latest poll: What are your expectations from iOS 6 The most promising expectations for me are Siri API's and an Apple TV SDK. The latter would create quite a stir this year because this would create a third App Store for Apple and would prepare Apple to position itself with a nice catalog of applications for a future iTV if ever Apple decide to launch one. Would be curious to read the HIG for Apple TV applications.

It’s understandable that developers want to cash in on the success of App Store hits like Angry Birds and Cut the Rope, but surely calling a game Cut the Birds 3D is a distastefully unsubtle way of doing it, isn’t it?Blatant sponging off other games’ fames aside, Cut the Birds is actually quite an enjoyable game in itself. Some people are fine with books and Internet surfing, but usually this is not good enough. Why Does Reading Fall Short? The problem with starting out is that you’re starting out and you think that you can digest the whole Internet at once. All this does is lead to confusion and inaction. With iOS as with anything else, there’s a hundred ways to do hundreds of tasks. What’s the Solution? It’s simple really: you need a roadmap and a little bit of guidance, at…

Your app’s object graph is the collection of objects that are active in your app when the app is running.  For iOS apps, this is the application object, the app delegate, window and all the custom objects that you’ve created. Usually, your application will have a sub-set of objects in your object graph that you are using to store user generated content.  For Tasting Notes, this was a Notebook object that was made up of Note objects. This is the part of the object graph that you probably have managed by Core Data or saved locally to your app’s filesystem in one way or…

One of the hardest genres to execute well is the top-down racer. The developer has to figure out a way to make the game work where the controls can be reversed. This provides an interesting challenge, and when it is done correctly, it makes for a fun racing game that breaks away from the standard genre conventions. Mini Motor Racing ($1.99)  is a top down racing game on the iPhone. So that begs the question: does it get the controls right, or is it a frustrating excursion into bad controls and extreme lack of fun? Gameplay As you can probably deduce by the fact that Mini Motor Racing has…

To accomplish this familiar goal, Wawa has to jump on enemies, hop over bottomless pits, and…

    14 May 2012 | 11:05 pm
I spent some time in Sweden over the weekend hang out with colleagues and one of the places I went was just off the ocean. I walked down to the water front the scene was breathtaking and so serene. Although I had my Nikon D7000 in the back of the car, I just didn’t feel like walking back up the hill to get it. I pulled out my iPhone, fired up the True HDR App and captured the scene. Although I’ve had this App on my iPhone 4s for a while now, I hadn’t really used it much. I was blown away by not only the ease of use, but also by the results! First of all I shot this HDR hand…

  • Adobe Proto for iPad is Here

    Terry White
    11 May 2012 | 2:57 am
Adobe Proto helps enables you to mock up websites with simple gestures right on your iPad. If you want to add a DIV to the page just draw a rectangle. If you want an image draw an X, a video draw a triangle, etc. Move these objects around, add text place holders, menus and navigation. The wireframes that you’re building are using industry standard CSS. Once you’re done sync your wireframe to Creative Cloud (free 2GBs of space) to further build it out in DreamWeaver CS6. Seems like a must have for web designers that use DreamWeaver and an iPad.

Along with the release of Creative Cloud today (and Creative Suite 6 earlier this week) Adobe has released Adobe Collage for iPad. Adobe Collage allows you to create “moodboards” by combining images, drawings, videos and text together on one cavas. I see creatives jot down their ideas on sketch pads all the time. Now there’s a way to do it right on your iPad. However, beyond just jotting down ideas, you can begin to visualize those ideas by also adding the imagery and videos. You can even import your PDFs, Photoshop .PSD files and Adobe Illustrator .AI files. Search for…

Everyone knows that the camera on the iPhone is one of the best cameras offered on a mobile phone; but up until now there hasn’t been a way to get uncompressed files from that great camera to work with in external image editors like Photoshop. 15 May 2012 | 11:20 pm
Apple has made the analysts believe that they are slowing down the production of the current iPhone 4S model to prepare the retail shelves for the upcoming iPhone 5. This is the same plan of preparation that Apple did before the release of the iPhone 4S and since the iPhone 5 is expected to be released this October it comes as no surprise. This big gap in-between iPhone launch’s must mean big things are in store for both the consumer and Apple. I am pretty confident there will be changes to the design of the iPhone, it will be look like a mini version of the iPad with the slightly…

iPhone and iPad News and Reviews
    11 May 2012 | 5:41 pm
There are a bunch of iPhone 5 rumors floating around the internet lately. Despite what you have read or what you have been told, Apple has still not finalized the design of the new iPhone 5. No larger screen, no metal back and no 16:9 aspect ratio is to be expected as of right now, that does not mean Apple won’t change it on a whim. There is currently a new smaller dock connector being tried out on the prototype but the screen size, the aspect ratio and the home button have remained the same. Apple has made it clear that if the screen size does happen to increase with the new iPhone 5,…

Apple is going forward with the 7-inch mini iPad with a projected October 2012 release, possibly on October 5th as that is the day Steve Jobs passed away. Apple will be leaving no space for the competition as they will be listing the new mini iPad at $200 to $250 price range. There have been rumors that the new smaller version of the iPad will be identical to the current 9.7 inch iPad just a scaled down version. It will include a 2048×1536 resolution display also with a pixel density of around 326 ppi, the same as the iPhone 4S. Steve Jobs did not like the idea of a scaled down iPad,…

  • Monstaaa! Preview

    Sean Koch
    15 May 2012 | 10:21 pm
Last year fate took an axe to Blue Tongue Entertainment, a long-running development house based in Melbourne. One of the indie studios to rise from its ashes was Pixel Elephant, who turned in a solid Sokoban-style puzzler in last October’s Puzzled Rabbit. Now they’re making a second trip to the App Store with Monstaaa! and were kind enough to lend us a preview copy while they add the finishing touches over the next two weeks. As you might expect from Pixel Elephant’s previous work, Monstaaa! is a tricky logic puzzler. However, it contrasts quite a bit with Puzzled Rabbit in…
  • Interview With Troll inc’s Jim Murray

    15 May 2012 | 7:28 pm
We may never know what a “jellyflug” is exactly, but we’re excited to learn more about Troll inc’s upcoming action-adventure debut. Here to talk about it is studio lead Jim Murray. Let’s start out by learning a little about Troll inc. How many people are on the team, how do you divide all the responsibilities of game design among yourselves, and is Jellyflug everyone’s first videogame industry experience? Troll inc was set up by Jim Murray (me), Mark Quinn, Gavin McLaughlin and Delia Millan. It’s our first commercial game for the whole team. In terms of roles, I…
  • 6th Planet’s Second Major Update Has Landed!

Wow, Monkube certainly don’t monkey around when it comes to updates! Their comic book-inspired take on the Lunar Lander genre, 6th Planet — one of our favorite iOS games of 2011, as you may remember – just benefited from a whole bunch of tweaks and improvements, as well as being kitted out with some awesome-sounding new content. Update 2 comes packing 10 all-new levels, including the prologue scene to 6th Planet II: Mission Earth(!), a faster ship for free (which was previously only available via an in-app purchase), Facebook and ‘Gift this app’ integration, a…

Nob Studio’s label may be pronounced “noob” to the Singaporean ear, yet these veteran Flash developers are anything but. They’ve already brought six titles to the App Store and their seventh, Dragon Evolution, looks prepared to overshadow their previous work. As an auto-scroller played over a fair amount of time and with a heavy strategic element, it’s also poised to freshen up the genre. Dragon Evolution casts you as a big shadow-puppet dragon out to rescue its eggs from little shadow-puppet warriors. It’s hardly an easy task seeing as the little peeps…

    14 May 2012 | 9:55 am
In Square-Enix’s Victorian Mysteries: Woman in White (out now, $0.99) – originally released on the PC as Mystery Masterpiece: Woman in White – you find yourself whisked away to a conspiracy in the days of yore, based on the classical novel by Wilkie Collins. In this Hidden Object game you – in the role of an art tutor – are tasked with dealing matters of conspiracy, death, love affairs, inheritances, as well as the requisite duty of finding random objects amongst piles of great clutter. It should be noted right now – before I move on to the review proper…

  • The Singing Alphabet

    Jamie Pearson
    16 May 2012 | 5:12 am
The Singing Alphabet is a fresh and original app that defies easy categorization. But if we had to try, we’d say it’s a phonics-based, music-mixing, jamtastic alphabet app. With 26 friendly letters at your child’s fingertips, he can create an endless number of jazzy musical combinations.  If he touches a letter, it sings its phonetic sound in a continuous loop.  He can then add letters, make words, or press the “Shh!” button to clear selections. Why we like it: It’s so danceable!  Also, there are so many varieties of sounds.  The “s” sort of…

    14 May 2012 | 11:22 am
Monkey Math School Sunshine (from the creators of the bestselling app Monkey Preschool Lunchbox) partners your child with a frisky monkey as they tackle fun, beach-themed math activities. There’s simple addition, counting, tracing, and pattern recognition, plus plenty of clams, star fish, crabs, jellyfish and shells. Why we like it: Great graphics, varied activities, and a swinging calypso soundtrack?  Check. This fun app has rewards too.  Every time your child successfully completes a few levels, she’ll be rewarded with a prize (sea creatures to add to her aquarium). We also…
  • Rainbow Sentences

    9 May 2012 | 10:16 am
Rainbow Sentences is an educational language app that teaches students how to form grammatically correct sentences with the help of color cues.  Learning nouns, verbs, and prepositions can be intimidating for young writers, but this app makes it fun. Students have to unscramble the color-coded sentence at the bottom of a picture by dragging the words to their matching color line at the top. After they build their sentence, they can record themselves reading it out loud. Kids will like that many of the pictures and sentences are a bit kooky: “The shoes are sleeping in the bed.” Well, duh.

Franklin’s Bubble Blaster is a sweet game for fans of Franklin, that terrapin star of page and screen. The premise is simple…Franklin’s Aunt’s bubble machine is out of control, so Franklin and  your child have to pop them all (there are 25 different varieties, and they’re interactive) before they fill the shop.  Pop enough bubbles and you’ll get up to five downloadable Franklin and Friends wallpapers. • Trucks

    Jamie Pearson
    3 May 2012 | 5:10 am
Trucks is an educational app that allows toddlers and preschoolers to dabble in sequencing, sorting, and problem solving. Your kids will never realize this, though.  They’ll be too busy soaping and rinsing a car they’ve just driven through mud, changing flat tires, and dumping dirt from a dump truck.  That is, when they’re not playing with the car and truck parade. For a car-crazy kid?  Nirvana. Why we like it: Open-ended, imaginative play.  Tongue-in-cheek humor.  Cute characters.  Mellow music (that can be turned off when you’ve had enough).  Intuitive, no…

  • Review: iPad Apps in One Hour for Lawyers by Tom Mighell -- overview of legal apps

    15 May 2012 | 12:51 am
Dallas attorney Tom Mighell wrote iPad in One Hour for Lawyers, a great introduction to the iPad that I reviewed last year.  His follow-up book is iPad Apps in One Hour, a book that describes about 200 apps that are recommended for lawyers who use an iPad.  Mighell gave me a free review copy of the soft cover version of the book, but I see that it is also available on the iBookstore.  True to its name, you can read this entire book in about an hour, and after doing so you will have a good handle on the apps that you can use to make the most of an iPad in your law practice. After providing…

In January of this year, Apple introduced iBooks Author, software that allows you to create beautiful and sophisticated books for the Apple iBookstore that can be read on an iPad.  This powerful software lets authors integrate text, pictures, videos and more.  One of the first titles that I have seen that takes advantage of this new publishing system is Paperless, a a $5 book by David Sparks.  Sparks is an attorney in Orange County, CA and he is well known for his MacSparky website and the Mac Power Users podcast that he does with Florida attorney Katie Floyd.  Sparks also wrote iPad at…

I saw several references on the web this week (such as this one) to a letter that Apple sends new employees when they join the company.  It contains a nice message that could apply to many other professions, including many law firms:  "There's work and there's your life's work.  The kind of work that has your fingerprints all over it.  The kind of work that you'd never compromise on.  That you'd sacrifice a weekend for.  You can do that kind of work at Apple.  People don't come here to play it safe.  They come here to swim in the deep end.  They…

Around 40,000 people are in New Orleans this week for the International CTIA Wireless convention, the largest meeting of the wireless industry in the world.  Apple itself does not have an official presence at the show (although I'm sure Apple employees are here), but the convention is full of companies that are a part of the iPhone and iPad ecosystem.  I spent some time on the exhibit floor yesterday and saw lots of interesting iPhone accessories.  I also bumped in to the Android robot wearing a pair of Mardi Gras beads.  I didn't ask the robot what it had to do on Bourbon…

    ouriel@appsfire.com
    16 May 2012 | 10:14 am
The Short Version Appsfire is introducing today a powerful and innovative signal to assess whether an app is worth downloading. App Score is a dynamic score which processes dozens of parameters several times a day across all the apps in the iOS App Store. The App Score for a particular app goes beyond the current ratings, rankings and reviews for that app; it also analyzes the rating and ranking performance over time, incorporates additional metadata and reviews for that app across the web, identifies apps engaging in suspicious rating/review behavior in the App Store, and synthesizes the…

With the latest version of Appsfire Deals, we introduced a major refresh to our app icon. Appsfire Deals has come a long way, and it was about time that our icon felt as current and as bold as the app itself.   We’re thrilled with the result, and we hope, you, our users, are too. iOS Inspires Me, a terrific catalog of beautiful (and indeed inspiring!) app icons and user interfaces, seems to think so. We like to try stuff out. For example, three years ago Jeremy felt like trying out app development; and the rest is history. You never know what will happen when you try stuff out, but it can open up whole universes of possibility that you had never seen or known before. So it is in the spirit of trying stuff out that we are creating our first iBook. Yes, we do not know what will come of Apple’s newly opened up iBook platform. We think, but are not sure, that the iBookstore may soon become analogous to the Music Store or App Store—both in terms of volume and profit. Others disagree.

    Marketing Your App
    16 May 2012 | 8:40 am
A website gives you a new way to promote your iPhone or iPad app – it is a stand alone advertisement that can link directly to the App Store where people download your creation. Your website has the flexibility to show what makes your application special. The real advantage of having a website is that you have complete freedom to do what you want. You are not limited to one icon, a few screenshots, and some short text like in the App Store. Put another way, the difference between $1.99 and $0.99 is not that big. But the difference between $0.99 and free is huge…

We think that the road ahead will be paved in part, maybe in large part, by HTML5. The idea of creating great apps that feel native and can go anywhere is appealing. It is great for developers–and also for stores and new models based on the app economy. Over the past couple of weeks, as we have prepared to bring HTML5 apps on to appbackr, we have been at HTML5 events from Santa Clara to Barcelona. Some of the subtle challenges, like the great snap that you feel with native apps is being addressed so that HTML5 apps feel like native ones. Companies like ideateca, which put on one of the…

It should be abundantly clear by now that it’s not enough to just think up a good idea for an app, build and ship it in order to be successful. The question, then, is: What can you focus on to make sure you’re prioritizing the right goals and tasks in order to make progress on your business on a regular basis? Simplifying and focusing your approach requires understanding the math behind your app business. When you understand the core drivers of your business, it’s much easier to measure your progress and to identify when you need to make a change in order to achieve your goals. The app…

    8 May 2012 | 9:00 am
Apple has released an update to iOS that fixes a number of minor (but annoying) bugs within the operating system. The update was just released on Monday afternoon (at least for those of us on the eastern half of the US) and includes fixes for iPads and iPhones. According to Apple, iOS 5.1.1 improves the reliability of the HDR photo option when you try to take photos using the Camera app’s shortcut from the lock screen. (This one drives me the most crazy). It also fixes some AirPlay video bugs that affected playback “in some circumstances,” improves the reliability of syncing…

Apple is reportedly considering responding to the upcoming second-generation ultrabooks by launching a US$799 MacBook Air in the third quarter of 2012, according to sources from the upstream supply chain. Although Acer has recently reduced its ultrabook shipment target, Intel continues to aggressively push ultrabooks and is aiming to have the devices priced at US$699 in the second half of the year. However, if Intel is unable to bring down ASPs to its goal, the price gap between ultrabooks and the US$799 MacBook Air may further postpone the time ultrabooks become standardized, the sources…

Friday’s became that national chain, with the recent announcement that it is launching its own payment app, powered by Tabbed Out’s software. While the new app will only currently work at 350 of T.G.I. Friday’s 600 locations, more should come on board soon. The launch of the…

There are many iPhone users, and some experts say that the market is almost saturated but I beg to differ. I think iPhone lovers want to buy newer models the second they are launched. Gigaom gives some tips for new iPhone users: The iPhone is amazing, but it is after all still a phone, and sometimes you won’t want it to make noise. Simply hit the sleep button (top right) to instantly silence any ringing and vibrating already in progress. Flick the switch on the upper left side of the phone to turn off audio notifications. Also, in Settings, navigate to Sounds. Here you what sounds (if any)…

I’ll admit it. The ability to rest my iPhone on a speaker system is appealing. I would love to be able to turn my iPhone into a stereo system when I have company, and the ability to wake up to the sounds of the songs in my iTunes account would be nice. But I’ve yet to find a good iPhone speaker dock that will work with my case, even though most iPhone users wouldn’t even think about jetting around town without a case covering our most expensive mobile device. One solution is a dock extender, which is basically a cable that runs from the dock to your phone. This is what I use. But…
